los angeles annual yearbook 2033

created as a physical object to document and retain nearly six months of inquiry and research, the los angeles annual yearbook for 2033, is a fictional work of design that serves as a time capsule, speculating on the conditions of los angeles county ten years into the future. It presents a vision of the future informed by the state of the city in the year 2023, societal trends and possible tracjetories for life in southern california by chronicalling major figures and events from la county.

text was produced through a series of interactions between editors, albert green and sam sherman, and open ai’s chatgpt large language model wherein they developed projective scenarios through direct observation and research that project possible near futures for la county. Images were generated through midjourney ai where various combinations of images and text were used to formulate visual information related to these scenarios.

en route photography book

en route is a meditation on what it means to be en route and places emphasis on both of these elements with an understanding that they, perhaps more than anything, shape our perceptions and collective memory of a place, whether it is a tourist site, an urban center, or a natural wonder.

all of the images were shot on an iphone, a testament to its power as a creative tool and ability to capture everyday scenes with both intimacy and immediacy.

process notes:

1. front cover design

akkurat pro, a neutral yet elegant sans serif anchors the title, while a blend effect brings a sense of motion to the cover, reflecting the idea of travel as form of movement from one location to another.

2. interior spreads

color choices

a neutral yet soft taupe serves as the background color for both covers as well as pages containing front and end matter, invoking a sense of groundedness and quiet sophistication while interior spreads are intentionally left white creating a gallery styl.e setting for images.

image placement

images with wider aspect ratios are positioned against either edge of the spread punctuating certain moments and establishing a visual flow between pages.

layout

individual photos are given ample breathing room with generous margins while strategic pairings on spreads with multiple images create a visual dialogue between those featuring similar subject matter and/or colors.

3. geographical index

the last spread, a geographical index, serves as a final point of reference, allowing readers to identify the location where each photo was taken.
